Enjoyable book

I enjoyed reading this book. It gives a very detailed account of the rise of neoliberalism in the USA. I'm not sure if the claim that neoliberalism has fallen can be born out however, but a good argument is made nonetheless. Personally I would see Trump as a neoliberal wrapped in populist clothing. My only criticism is that focus on the USA and not the broader neo-liberal networks, having said that it doesn't pertain to be an international history.

If you already know everything like so many people do, then this book is not for you. If on the other hand you find politics confusing, and you know that at least one political group or the other (or both) are lying, then I highly recommend this book. The author includes clear, concise sketches of "The New Deal" and its demise. Likewise he presents a brief but clear picture of the rise of "Neoliberalism". And a bit surprisingly, he says that the neoliberal consensus in American politics has ended.

I lived through the events in Gerstle's book and was totally confused by them. For example, I never understood what the "Occupy Wall street " movement was supposed to achieve. I never understood what the Republicans had against Bill Clinton, "the best Republican President of the twentieth century". I didn't know that much about Jimmy Carter etc. I always thought that H.W. Bush was the best Republican president of my adult lifetime, but he didn't excite the base. The answers are in the book. Even if you don't agree with the answers in the book, there are lots of facts about the major political players of the last 90 years, and you will find yourself being educated.

I ordered this book because once upon a time the liberal democrats and their party were genuinely for the people, and I wanted to learn more about the topic. These were the days of JFK and RFK and of course before... there was Franklin D. Roosevelt. I have left the democratic party along with Tulsi Gabbard. The party and its members have become hard to stomach. The book satisfied this curious search.

Most Americans know nothing about neoliberal economics - which is the system currently promoted by both of our political parties -- a system which states clearly that the only purpose of capitalism is to MAXIMIZE PROFITS, and the governments must comply. Because both parties connected to this "system" between the times of Reagan and Bill Clinton, we are constantly wondering what went wrong -- one party stopped fighting for us. This book does a really good job of describing the source of neoliberal thought, what it means, why DEMS also accepted that system, and what it has done to everyone but the already rich.

The author has his hot and cold spots. When finishing this book, one is left without a firm grasp of the neoliberal order.
There are some things left out of the book and other areas covered well. In fairness to the author, he does a good job writing with clarity on the timeline of the Great Recession and the big banks/also AIG. The author adds nothing new here, but writes well. However , there is nothing novel concerning the fall of Lehman and who should bare responsibility . There are items left out. Concerning Hillary- she controlled the DNC and how this might have hurt Bernie is never mentioned. There are other areas too.
I contacted the author and received no response. I have no regrets reading the book. However, it is not one I would reference .

The author supremely succeeds in connecting the various elements that have led to the current situation (and that most people may have followed in their daily reading but never quite seen in their interrelatedness).
