Mein letztes Sony Produkt...
‐-------------------------------

Before you even think about pressing that purchase button, it's important to know what you are wanting in a pair of in-ear headphones and whether these tick all the boxes.
If SOUND QUALITY is the most important aspect you are looking for, then there are other better options available on the market, such as Sony's 'WF-1000XM4' in-ear headphones which aren't too far off in price compared to these LinkBuds.
What these LinkBuds DO offer is the ability to have more of an awareness to your surroundings whilst being able to listen to music or take calls and in doing so, does compromise on the sound quality a little.
I already own a decent pair of wireless earphones; however, the reason why I decided to purchase these is so I can listen to music at work whilst still having a sense of my surroundings as cars get moved around a lot near me.
▬ Box Contents ▬▬▬
The packaging is very small and contents are compactly and very neatly placed inside:
• LinkBuds.
• Charging case.
• USB - USB-C cable (very short).
• Various ear loop size attachments (XS, S, M, L & XL).
• Instruction manual.
▬ Set-Up ▬▬▬
First step is to give the earphones and charging case a full charge before use; simply make sure the earphones are in the charging case and link the case to a powered source via the included or your own USB-C cable.
Whilst they are charging, get a head start by downloading the 'Sony | Headphones Connect' App in Apple's App Store or Android's Play Store. Whilst it isn't a necessary download to use them, it does allow you to wirelessly update the earphones firmware and adjust/customise various settings.
Once charged, the set-up process is very straight-forward; as you take the LinkBuds out of the charging case, they automatically turn on and you just search for them like you would for any other Bluetooth device.
When you open the App, it will guide you through linking them with the App and from there you can turn on/off various settings and some which you can customise. The app will also give you an up to date status of remaining battery for each earphone and charging case.
▬ Main Features (Pros & Cons) ▬▬▬
- Speak-to-Chat:
✔ This is a handy feature should you start talking to someone; the earphones will detect this and pause the music you are currently playing, allowing you to fully hear them. There are options to resume your music after so many seconds the earphones stop detecting vocals (minimum is 5 seconds).
✖ The downside is you literally can't sing without the earphones pausing your music, so if you like singing, you may want to disable this feature.
- Tap Functions:
✔ There are pre-set categories to choose for each earphone (L/R); this could be anything from adjusting volume, skipping tracks and voice assist functions etc...
✖ I was disappointed to see you can't manually customise the options within the categories.
- Wide Tap Area:
✔ This increases the detection area from tapping the earphones directly, to being able to pick up tap commands from nearby areas such as the cheek.
✖ I found this at times to be too sensitive; when I was talking to my friend over the phone, I had a quick chomp on some food when the earphones confused it as a tap command and hung up on my friend; we tried this several times and it happened each time.
The features are quick to enable and disable through the app, so depending on my situation, I'll adjust to my needs.
▬ Sound Quality & Battery Life ▬▬▬
Whilst the overall sound quality is compromised, presumably due to the ring design, I wouldn't say it's bad at all. OF course, other headphones within the same price range are better, but I don't feel like I'm getting a bad audio experience. Whilst the sound isn't flat, it doesn't deliver much bass, so if you love bass, these ain't for you.
I can't comment exactly how good the microphone quality is; however, when I was talking with my friend, we were able to have a fluent conversation without him asking me to repeat my words, so based on that, it's good enough to do the job.
Battery life will vary depending on how many features are enabled and the volume you have the earphones set at. Whilst on a full charge the earphones are supposed to last up to 5.5 hours with the charging case holding up to 12 hours additional charge, but that could be less depending on your use.
Considering how small these earphones are, I'm surprised that they can even deliver 5.5 hours of use, that's pretty impressive. The charging case can give you a further 1.5 hours on a quick 10 minutes charge!
▬ Final Thoughts ▬▬▬
The LinkBuds definitely have its pros and cons, so it's just a matter of seeing which outweighs the other for your needs.
If you're wanting some compact earphones that gives you some flexibility and provides you with a bit more spatial awareness, then these may be right for you.

Upon first listening to them, it was clear that there was essentially no bass at all. I tried a variety of genres including rock, country, and even some vocal focused folk and acapella music to give them the best shot at sounding decent. With playing with the EQ and listening for around an hour I started to get them to sound reasonable and was starting to be happyish with them, but then I switched to my Sony WH-1000XM4s and back again.
In comparrison the Linkbuds sounded tinny and shrill; I had started to get used to them and in isolation they were okish, but compared to any normal headphones, they just don't sound good.
I think that unless you very specifically need earbuds that will let you have such awareness of what's going on around you, or you struggle with having silicone/foam tips inside your ear canals, there are far better options out there. There are plenty of over-ear open back headphones (notably from Grado and Sennheiser) for half the price that will perform far better; Grado even offer a wireless set now if you've sworn off of wires.
I think I may have kept these for a few limited use cases (walking around the shops, or working outside) if they were nearer the £80 mark, but £150 is just far too much money for the quality. I will be returning them for a refund.

To be clear, these are not for those who want deep punching bass by any means, so if all you care about is loud dirty bass, go look at some in-ear buds, I personally rock the original Samsung Buds.
These earbuds are best in their mids/highs and deliver the excellent audio quality that comes expected with Sony while still delivering bass that is adequate for a loud music session, but you better be in a loud environment or alone because these are open-back earbuds, which means the audio at half volume easily leaks. So no listening to Tay-Tay without your colleagues knowing.
I've been using them while at work and at about 1/6th - 1/4th volume my music/podcasts are reasonably loud to be enjoyable, while still being quiet enough to talk to my colleagues, even with the volume reduction when speaking turned off. I have also been using them at the gym which is really helpful when you can still hear your mates but listen to some heavy music while working out. They have only fallen out one while walking but I put on the bigger ear-wings which has solved that issue.
Overall, I was expecting a lot less out of them but have been pleasantly surprised at how good they are.

I have no complaints about the sound. There definitely is bass but it's a very neutral/natural bass. I listen to a lot of electronic music and so I just use Clear Bass set to +5 and that gives me all the bass I need. I suspect that the people who say there is no bass are either used to far more bass than me or haven't been able to get a good fit. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Live had a similar fit issue but, luckily for me, both of these earphones fit my elephant ears perfectly and sound great to me.
Adaptive Volume Control, Speak-To-Chat and Wide Area Tap all work as advertised BUT the manual states that if you use any of them (or DSEE, or the equaliser or set the sound quality to 'Priority on sound quality') them it shortens the 5.5 hour battery life. I've managed to get 4.5 hours with all of these turned off, although that included four phone calls. When I first used them with most settings turned on then I only got 2.5 hours of battery life. FYI: even when Wide Area Tap is turned off you can still tap just in front of your ears to operate the earphones.
Sometimes the right bud runs out of power before the left, with the left usually having 20-25% power left. The manual states that varying battery consumption between the two earphones is not a fault but doesn't explain why it happens.
Call quality is superb. I own six other wireless earphones/headphones and these are easily the best for calls. I've been told that my voice sounds even better than when just using the phone plus these really do remove background noise rather than amplifying it, as some of my other earphones do.
I'm knocking one star off for the battery life because aside from that I love them but, like the Buds Live, there really should be a way for people to be able to try a demo pair before they buy to check if their ear shape/size is compatible.
UPDATE (29/07/22): I had two good days of equal battery life but since then the right battery is draining faster than the left again even though I have turned off ALL of the additional features. I have been wearing them for 2.5 hours today and the left ear is at 44% and the right ear is at 22%. Yesterday I barely got 3.5 hours out of the right ear. Maybe phone calls use more power from the right bud than the left? Having searched online it appears that I'm not the only person having this problem with them. It's only because I can get a further 1.5 hours use on a 10-minute charge that I'm not returning them since I like everything else about them.
UPDATE (24/08/22): There was a firmware update a couple of weeks ago and now I'm getting 4.5 to 5.5 hours of playtime per charge (including phone calls) with far less difference in the remaining charge of each earbud. Also, I may be imagining it but the default sound seems more full-bodied now . Much happier. Five stars.
