3,0 sur 5 étoiles I really wanted to love these...

Over the past year or so, I've been getting really into headphones. I like having a diverse range of headphones to fit different roles and situations, so my primary rotation consists of the Senn. HD58X, Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pros, Hifiman HE4XX, and the Meze 99 Noirs, all of which I highly recommend depending on your personal preferences. I picked up the AKG K702s because I was itching for something with a wide soundstage and had a bit of FOMO with these cans getting rarer by the day, but I wish I'd done more research before purchasing. I've heard worse, but there's a lot holding these back. For reference, I listened to these primarily on a Topping E30/L30 stack and tested them on an O2 as well as a Schiit stack.

Pros:
-Extremely wide soundstage. This is what I bought them for and they absolutely deliver. This makes them phenomenal if you are listening to something orchestral.
-Decent imaging. It's not as good as some other options in my collection, but it's good enough to game fairly competitively or get immersed in a song or an open game world.
-Follows close to the Harmon Curve (minus a bit of bass) I hesitate to put this as a pro because I'm more or less indifferent to the Harmon Curve, but I know this is a pro for a lot of people.

Cons:
-Soundstage (again). I wanted wide and wide is what I got. So wide, in fact, that I find that most of the music I listen to struggles to fill its soundstage leading to this... distant quality to the sound that I don't get with anything else. It's hard to put my finger on. When listening to to a big epic soundtrack, the soundstage is filled up and these headphones shine like nothing else, but listening to anything rock, for instance (September Mourning, Egypt Central, Papa Roach, Trivium, Violet Orlandi covers, etc.), they just sound... Stuffy in a kind of fatiguing way. Like a pressure has built up in my ears and prevented me from approaching the music, regardless of volume. With your music, this may or may not be a problem, but it's definitely a problem for me.
-Comfort. These are some of the least comfortable headphones I own. I have a medium sized head and small-medium ears. The headband, while a suspension design, is an incredibly rigid strip of leather that doesn't conform to the head at all, so I get a hot spot at the center of the headband that gets unbearable after an hour or two. The stock earpads are big and relatively spacious for my ears, but might be a bit close to the drivers if your ears stick out further than mine. They are also quite stiff, so they don't seal very well.
-Build Quality. I can't say enough bad things about the build quality. It is the cheapest plastic design I've ever seen. I'm talking cheap kids toy kind of plastic. The rods that connect the ear cups above the suspension band in particular are super thin possibly even hollow plastic. I get legitimately nervous about breaking them every time I pick them up or put them down. Also, the suspension system functions essentially the same as a cheap lanyard, with thin exposed cords that extend and retract. Compared to the suspension band on the Meze 99's, this is a joke, especially considering I paid about the same price for these ($220 iirc). The cable is also thin, absurdly long, and kinks easily.

AKG used to be known for their quality, but apparently their quality took a dive after they were bought out. Now, the K702s are discontinued along with much of the old AKG lineup, and it doesn't surprise me. If you're like me and looking at these out of FOMO, just let them pass. If you really want a pair of AKGs, look for an original Austrian pair on the used market. They'll be a bit more worn, but will still probably last longer than these.

tl;dr - these headphones have the most impressive soundstage I've ever heard at the expense of a somewhat stuffy presentation for some music and absolutely embarrassing comfort and build quality.

Best use case: orchestral music/semi-competitive gaming for as long as you can bear to wear them

3,0 sur 5 étoiles K702 are delicate. If AKG put these on a K553 mkII build they'd be 5 stars

AKG K702 are great if they arrive in once piece and fitting properly. I'm on my second pair held together with elastic (they fell off my desk and landed on the soft carpet). I tried to get a third pair but they arrived more loose fitting than the old loose pair I was replacing for this reason. I tried K712 too but they had a clip missing/broken (warehouse stock) and sounded poorer than the cheaper K702. I'm a classical musician and use K702 for close listening. They have a spike in the treble which can be a little fatiguing on the oboe/sibilant range. I'd love to see these headphones mounted on a sturdy K553 mkII frame (couldn't get a pair of K553mkii without noticeable 2-4dB channel imbalance so I gave up and use K550 mkIII for closed backs which share the K702's treble spike and are a bit too big compared to some of the K553mkII units...though smaller than other K553 units - fair amount of variation in fit between units and the same goes for K702). I tried Austrian Audio open backs which I didn't like at all. AKG K702 is best I've found apart from the build which is incredibly delicate and quite creaky. Big 3D soundstage. Great sound. I can recommend for the usual asking price. Just wish they were on a K553mkII style frame instead.

Nach 10 Jahren AKG K701 war das Polster so durchgenudelt, dass es fast schon schmerzhaft war, den Kopfhörer zu tragen. Also kurzerhand K702 bestellt und...

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Flawed design hold back good sound

Half a year into owning and using these headphones, the right side starting cutting out. I have plenty other headphones to use, so just shelved them for months before I got around to diagnosing.

Turns out AKG uses incredibly flimsy wires to bridge terminals in both cups. Cable breaks are INCREDIBLY common in these, happening to some users multiple times in a single year. This poor quality should not be accepted for anything over $20. I haven't re-soldered the wire, but I did have to use some adhesive to stop it from moving so much and cutting out.

Sure, these sound good. Possibly one of my favorite. Great sound for the price if you never have to deal with the cheap wires.

If you want so solder in better cables, pick them up on sale. Otherwise, don't touch these unless you want to send them back over and over again.

Update 11-26-12

Hfi580's and DT990's have had substantial burn in and the DT990's are amazing. Usable extension to subharmonic frequencies and on par with the akg's with the detail they manage. The Low frequency detail from the dt990's is superb, much more abundant bass than the K702's and more extension. The K702 soundstage is in another league than the dt990's but the 990's frequency response and output make short work of the 702's. I can still hear the wood wind players take their breath and hear the pick as it releases the guitar strings, but i had to add 3db @ 500 4dB @ 800 and 3dB @ 1K to pull the recessed mids out at first, but after some burn in the treble (5Khz+) calmed down to be silky smooth and in no way harsh or to prevalent. After 30 hours I was ablr to cut the eq needed in half and now the dt990's sound so good its hard to take them off. For the price, they are simply spectacular. The HFI-580's on the other hand turned into a gift for the wife to listen to her kindle on.....

*update* 11-20-12
After more burn in, the left can warmed up to a totally different sound stage and freq response than the right, I thought maybe it was an issue with my source, confirmed it was not, turned my attention to my bellari ha540, tryed an old pair of sony's I had laying around and both channels were even and clear as a bell, thinking it may still be the bellari somehow, I picked up a Bravo V2, same thing... Thought well maybe its my luck and the tubes arent up to par to run the 702's so I rolled tubes on both amps and still the same thing. My last effort to verify the phones were the issue was to pick up an Audioengine D1... It was the cans. They were scheduled to be sent back today and I have the hfi 580's and dt990's on the way. Sad thing is, both of those have better ratings, and combined only cost $20 more than these... The bass never came out like I thought it would, and by the time I had eq'd the bass to my spec (not a bass head mind you, I'm a reference/audiophile guy, the drivers were distorting trying to keep the extension low enough to use the cans for good ambient media... I was very disappointed these cans let me down, I really liked their imaging and flat response but below 80Hz they were not present as if the freq's were crossed out of the media.

*Old reveiw*
Out of the box they were atrocious so I cranked up the
Bellari HA540 Pure Class A Stereo Headphone Amplifier  and let them set for 3 hours, listened again and it was easy to hear the difference below 50Hz and the sound was warmer and smoother than at first, They will be on non stop for the next 4 days and I will update with my conclusion, but just after 3 hours of near rms power they are the best sounding headphones I have personally heard, I expect great things. I am a mobile hifi guy with many installs capable of subharmonic f3's and these were able to put pressure on my ear drums as low as 25Hz enjoyably but below that they roll off quickly. As is I was able to get enough low end to please me and everyone else listening by adding .7dB @ 50Hz and 6dB @ 30Hz to flatten their pre burn in response and even though the low end was boosted I didnt hear any affect on the 8kHz+ range like you'd expect from low end headphones. They are a bit heavy, I found my neck fatigue after around 30 minutes and I'n no stranger to weight on my head being a motorcycle enthusiast. As is, even if post burn in doesnt lower their f3, a good eq is all its gonna take (and luckily I have one handy) to add reference level sub 35Hz extension. I'm pondering a full studio setup just to run them to their sq limits to see what they are capable of but im on the fence about that lol.

Best Eq overall at this point was -.7@4kHz, +1.4@250Hz, +.7@50Hz, +6dB@30Hz (no matter what music type I played through them, their reproduction was very detailed and clear. The drivers are very fast.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Lots of pros but (for me) one major con
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 17 juillet 2021

.. decided I needed some decent headphones for recording and mixing music tracks, podcasts etc so after extensive research (well .. looking at a load of YouTube reviews) I decided on the AKG K702 .. so .. here’s what I found ..
Pros
The K702s are the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn .. easy to forget I’m wearing them
The sound stage is excellent .. never really heard anything like it
The lows and mids are really good .. well balanced
Cons
I found the trebles actually painful .. just about bearable on some 60s jazz (Art Blakey) .. also ok on quieter, acoustic and piano tracks and fine on some orchestral music .. but .. anything with fairly sharp guitars or brass (Stones, Ry Cooder, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, 60s Soul) was really piercing .. the real test came with some of my own mixes .. I went back to a number of previously mixed, mastered and released tracks .. the detail was impressive but again, the highs were uncomfortable .. these are tracks that have been tested on a range of devices (cheap headphones, AirPods Pro, Alexa devices, HomePod, hifi systems) and all sound good .. so I tried remixing a few using the AKGs .. the resulting tracks lost a lot of their sparkle and promoted the bass too much as I was compensating for the emphasised highs .. I know everyone’s hearing is different so it could just be my (very old) ears that can’t cope, but just to compare I sent for a set of BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pros .. and .. my original mixes sounded exactly as I intended .. so .. the AKGs are being returned and I’m definitely keeping the BeyerDynamics .. as I’ve already said, everyone hears differently and for me the AKGs didn’t do the trick .. great soundstage, great separation and details .. but those highs! .. headache inducing ..

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Great sounding headset with a big flaw.
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 2 juillet 2022
style: K702 - Casque ouvertNom du motif: UniqueAchat vérifié
This is a great sounding headset and I was perfectly happy until, after only a few months, the right channel went dead. Amazon were great, although it was well after the return window, and they sent me a new pair.
These lasted about four months and the right channel cut out again.
Turns out this problem is so common that it's covered by various forums and youtubers. The wiring in the right channel just breaks… There are two short lengths connecting the speaker to the overhead wires and one of them just fell apart… this is a pretty simple fix if you can solder and you can work out how to get in (you have to turn the small silver grills) but if you don't have the wherewithal or the inclination to repair your new headset you should probably avoid this one.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Can you justify the Price Tag!
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 3 octobre 2016

I don't know if I am 'qualified' to give a review, so I will give what I personally feel about them and what I actually bought them for - and why.

I had a superb set of headphones that were either Technics or some well known brand. They were very comfortable and I think - very good. Unfortunately being many years old the black glossy finish on the ear cushions started peeling off onto my ears. The headphones still worked perfectly though. Looked a bit of a twat walking down the road with bits of black stuck to my ears!

On my TV I have (had) a superb high end 5.1 surround sound system. Unfortunately the holiday flat next to mine sold to someone who decided to live there full time and my world of cinematic full bodied sound came to an end with a lady at my door in tears begging me to turn the volume down.

So, I decided to pay a grand price for a quality set of headphones. I read loads of reviews which were mostly gobble-de-gook and purely on all the comments surmised that these AKG K702 Open-Back Dynamic were the dogs.......

I now watch most TV with these headphones. Do they sound any different to my old £30 Technics? No. Are they as comfortable as my old £30 Technics? No. In fact they are UNCOMFORTABLE. The black headband is annoying and seems to serve no useful purpose, other than press itself into my head. Also the tension on the tightness on the ear cushions is too much and after any anything more than 10/15 minutes the headphones make their presence felt. The weight of the headphones also makes itself known.

All in all. I am disappointed. I am not sure what I was expecting. One thing is for sure though - I won't get black bits peeling off and sticking to my ears. I made sure when choosing the headphones that the cushions had to be foam.

I am certainly suffering from buyers remorse. I feel the £135 could have been better spent.

I am going to have to live with them, who is going to buy them used? My feeling is I may not be putting them to the use they were intended for, but for anyone who just wants a 'pair of headphones' save your money and buy something for a quarter of the price.

I thought about it a great deal and gave 3 stars - which is probably slightly generous given the comfort issue, but I may have been too harsh on the sound quality which for me sounded no more and no less than any other reasonable headphones.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Nice. But
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 4 novembre 2014
style: K702 - Casque ouvertNom du motif: UniqueAchat vérifié
For me these a double-edged sword. They are the first decent cans that I actually find comfy - having big jug-ears ! At 9.5cms in diameter, and perfectly round, they actually completely surround my ears, rather than touching them. Nice.

But, the foam is very firm, so much so, that they feel more like soft polystyrene, as opposed to memory foam. These literally sit around your ears, as opposed to cushioning softly around them. They are still better than the overly-squishy AKG 550s, which were the complete opposite.

Compared to the Fidelio X1s, they are slightly more roomy, and a whole lot less irritating against the skin. So, although the Philips Fidelios were a little warmer and louder (although the sound stage wasn't as good) those went back, and I'm plugging on with these.

My main issue is that they are literally, 100% plastic. Very light, but very fragile and flimsy. These are for keeping on a stand next to your listening chair. They are NOT for throwing around in a studio, or taking on a road trip. I doubt they'd survive a drop onto a carpeted floor to be honest.

Sonically, again they are a 2-headed beast. Firstly, they really need an amp. TV, streamed music, CD, from optical or USB, is very quiet and clinically flat. Once amplified though (and with my Fiio E17, it needs 6 or even 12 db gain !) it depends on the source material. If there is a rich bass and decent sound stage, these really show it off - beautifully ! Yes, some music will need 4, 6 or even 8 notches of extra bass, and around 2 notches LESS of treble, but a decent recording can be made to sound stunning.

However, a poor quality source, and nothing will help it.

Now, I haven't burned these in yet - some say they do benefit (a lot), some don't... so I'll edit this review in a week or so, if there is any improvement. For me, at the moment, they are a little bass-light, stunning mids, glorious sound stage, but overly bright treble.

What I don't get, is why they need so much amplification, to drive. At 60 ohms, they shouldn't be this quiet, but I'm guessing it's due to their 105 db sensitivity rating, which is quite low.

And, why couldn't they just use a little metal at least around the stress points of the structure. The hammock system they have designed, is very fragile, and the plastic components are also very thin - almost laughable, to be honest ! Overall, I have little confidence in their longevity, and as such. may 'bottle, out', and return them for something else.

Update: 2016 - not found anything better yet, so going to try again with a more powerful amp. Wi repoet back.
